Download Fedora 16 Verne Alpha

Para pengembang di Proyek Fedora telah mengumumkan ketersediaan satu-satunya versi alpha untuk Fedora 16. Versi yang awalnya dijadwalkan untuk rilis minggu lalu, tapi ditunda sepekan karena dijumpai adanya masalah serius. Akibatnya, Fedora juga menjadwal ulang rilis berikutnya dengan mundur 7 hari. Rilis final Fedora 16 (code name Verne) diharapkan tiba pada 1 November 2011.

Feature freeze sudah ditetapkan, sehingga rilis alpha harus berisi semua perubahan utama dalam daftar pengujian. Itu termasuk peralihan ke penggunaan boot loader GRUB2, meskipun secara resmi masih dalam pengembangan, namun telah lama digunakan oleh distro lain.

Versi Alpha ini menggunakan kernel Linux 3.0, sedang versi yang akan dirilis mulai akhir September atau awal Oktober nanti diharapkan telah menggunakan versi 3.1. Memuat versi alpha dari KDE Plasma Workspace 4.7.0, dan GNOME 3.1.5 yang menjadi pendahulu GNOME 3.2. Tim pengembangan juga telah mengganti init script dengan unit systemd. Sementara itu Systemd diganti upstart di Fedora 15. Rencana beralih ke penggunaan system file Btrfs sebagai default ditangguhkan hingga versi berikutnya (Fedora 17).

Proyek Fedora kembali mengumumkan ketersediaan untuk diuji coba versi pengembangan dari sistem operasi Fedora 16 (verne). Fedora 16 Beta akan menjadi rilis beta satu-satunya sebelum rilis final Fedora 16 yang semula dijadwalkan pada 1 November mendatang.

Fedora 16 beta telah memuat perubahan besar dari rilis pengembangan sebelumnya. Perubahan tersebut termasuk peralihan ke grub2, dukungan untuk Xen Dom0 dan pemantapan penggunaan systemd. Para pengembang juga telah menambahkan Java 7 sebagai technical preview namun bukan menjadikannya sebagai standar runtime environment untuk aplikasi Java.

Ditenagai oleh kernel Linux 3.1 prerilis, Fedora 16 beta kini juga telah di lengkapi lingkungan desktop Gnome 3.2 prerilis. Diharapkan pada watunya nanti, Fedora 16 final akan membawa rilis stabil terbaru dari kernel Linux dan lingkungan desktop Gnome 3.

Seperti halnya rilis Alpha yang tertunda satu pekan dari waktu yang dijadwalkan, rilis beta secara otomatis mengalami hal yang sama. Penundaan semacam ini adalah hal yang biasa dan tidak terkecuali pada Fedora. Akibat dari itu semua, rilis final Fedora 16 diperkirakan akan diumumkan setelah minggu kedua bulan November. Sepanjang tim pengembang tidak mengubah jadwal rilis lagi, diharapkan pada akhir bulan ini akan ada sebua release candidate (RC) yang mungkin tidak akan dipublikasikan secara luas, tidak seperti rilis Alpha dan beta ini. Dengan demikian, kami informasikan bahwa rilis final Fedora 16 akan diumumkan pada 8 November 2011 bukan 1 November seperti jadwal semula.
